Some Apple retail employees were instructed to discourage customers from visiting stores on October 23 to buy an iPhone Duo without a pre-order. Staff members said stores would likely have little or no inventory for unreserved launch-day purchases.

Pre-orders have already pushed delivery estimates well beyond launch day. Within 30 minutes, every configuration in Apple’s U.S. online store showed an estimated January 25 shipping date, effectively ruling out Christmas delivery through the online channel.

October 24 pickup remains uncertain

Apple’s online store tells customers to check for pickup availability on Saturday, October 24. Pickup reservations appeared briefly when pre-orders opened before being disabled, but Apple has not guaranteed that stock will be available that day.

It remains unclear how firmly the employee guidance is being applied or whether it covers stores worldwide. Apple has not publicly said whether any locations will have inventory for launch-day walk-in purchases.

Production constraints preceded launch

Warnings about limited supply emerged before Apple announced the iPhone Duo. Nikkei Asia reported that production was running at only a few hundred devices per day in late August, followed by additional manufacturing problems in late September.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple had at one point considered delaying sales until November. The company ultimately assembled enough inventory for an October 23 launch, although supply remained very limited.

Apple described demand as “nothing short of extraordinary” in a statement to the Financial Times and said it was working to deliver devices as quickly as possible. The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the United States, with the first pre-order deliveries scheduled for October 23.
