Apple is testing iPhone Duo 2 prototypes with Face ID, placing the sensor beneath the outer display, Mark Gurman reported on his Power On podcast.

The test would bring Face ID to a successor to the first iPhone Duo, which uses Touch ID. Early reviewers had identified the change to fingerprint authentication as a notable adjustment.

Face ID beneath the display

Gurman said Apple has been working to make Face ID components smaller. The report points to the under-display infrared camera in iPhone 18 Pro as an example of that work.

The prototypes are being tested with Face ID under the outer screen, but that does not confirm the feature will ship in the next model. It could instead arrive with iPhone Duo 3 if development takes longer.

Action button and Touch ID remain uncertain

In the same podcast episode, Gurman said Apple employees had explored adding an Action button to a future iPhone Duo. He expressed less confidence about that possibility.

It is also unclear whether Apple would retain the Touch ID sensor in the power button if Face ID is added, or remove it. Keeping both biometric options is another possibility, but has not been confirmed.
