Apple will limit third-party app support on its new HomeView smart display. The $299 device has a 7-inch screen and is designed to control connected accessories, make FaceTime calls, and play music and video.

The company says HomeView will work with compatible third-party audio and video apps from an iPhone alongside Apple apps including Music, Podcasts, and Safari.

Some apps require an iPhone nearby

Apple’s press release says some apps require a paired, compatible iPhone nearby. That condition does not appear in the same form on HomeView’s marketing page.

Apple also says subscriptions may be required for some content and services, and that certain apps are unavailable in some regions. The company lists Audiobooks, Apple Music Classical, News, and TV among its own apps that can also be provided from an iPhone.

Third-party apps may use CarPlay

Wired reported that a small number of third-party media apps, including Spotify, may be available, while developers can bring existing CarPlay apps to HomeView. If a compatible CarPlay app is already installed on an iPhone, it may appear automatically on HomeView after setup.

Apple has not explained how the nearby-iPhone requirement will work or whether developers need to take additional steps to support HomeView. It is also unclear whether compatibility will extend to other CarPlay categories, including communication apps and AI assistants.
