Apple released the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September 2026, five years after the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. For owners of the 2021 models, the upgrade covers battery life, cameras, performance and connectivity.

In the United States, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299; both include 256GB of storage. That is $200 more than the corresponding iPhone 13 Pro launch prices in 2021, although those phones started with 128GB.

Five generations of changes

The iPhone 13 Pro still supports iOS 27 and has a ProMotion display and three-camera system. Since its release, Apple has added Dynamic Island, an Always-On display, a 48-megapixel Main camera, Emergency SOS via satellite, the Action button, USB-C, Camera Control and expanded video features.

Cameras and performance

All three rear cameras on the iPhone 18 Pro have 48 megapixels. Its variable-aperture Main camera adds control over photography, while the Telephoto camera reaches 4x and offers an optical-quality 8x option. The front camera adds higher resolution, autofocus and Center Stage.

The A20 Pro chip and vapor chamber are aimed at demanding games, extended recording and sustained workloads. The iPhone 18 Pro also supports Apple Intelligence, which is unavailable on the iPhone 13 Pro, although both phones run iOS 27.

Pricing and trade-offs

Camera Control can open the camera, take photos, record video, lock focus and exposure, and adjust zoom and other shooting settings. The newer models also offer longer battery life, faster wired charging and USB-C.

The iPhone 18 Pro models are taller, thicker and slightly heavier. Their aluminum chassis may be more vulnerable to dents, and U.S. buyers who rely on a physical SIM must switch to eSIM. Apple no longer sells the iPhone 13 Pro, so current buyers would need a used or refurbished device.

Owners who are not ready to buy a new phone can extend an iPhone 13 Pro’s useful life by replacing its battery. For those ready to purchase, the combined improvements make upgrading to the iPhone 18 Pro easy to justify.
