Apple to release iPhone 18 Pro update for Face ID rebooting bug
Apple confirmed it is preparing a software update for iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max devices that could freeze and reboot after a failed Face ID attempt. The fix is expected early next week.
Apple is preparing a software update for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max to fix freezing and rebooting after a failed Face ID authentication. Apple confirmed to 9to5Mac that the update should arrive early next week.
The issue did not appear to affect every device, but reports from users and 9to5Mac readers indicated that it was reasonably widespread. During the failure, the phone stopped responding to touch input and performed a hard reboot several seconds later.
The failure was reproduced on iPhone 18 Pro
9to5Mac reproduced the issue on an iPhone 18 Pro by covering its face with a hand while trying to open the Passwords app through Face ID. A panic log could then be found in the iPhone Analytics section of Settings.
The reported behavior points to a software glitch rather than a confirmed hardware fault. Some customers had already exchanged their phones at Apple because they suspected a hardware problem, but the confirmed software fix means that replacement is unnecessary.
Redesigned Face ID sensor system
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max use a redesigned Face ID system. Its infrared camera was moved beneath the display near the status-bar clock, making the visible Dynamic Island 25% smaller.
Separately, Apple released watchOS 27.0.1 to address random restarts on Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4.
