iPhone Air vs. iPhone 18 Pro: Is the $100 upgrade worth it?

Apple's iPhone 18 Pro costs $100 more than the iPhone Air at every shared storage tier in the U.S. The Pro adds a more capable camera system, longer battery life and faster performance, while the Air is thinner and lighter.

The iPhone 18 Pro is the more practical choice for most buyers at Apple's current U.S. prices. It starts at $1,199 for 256GB, just $100 more than the iPhone Air with the same storage.

For that premium, the Pro adds Ultra Wide and Telephoto cameras, a variable-aperture main camera, a newer chip, longer battery life, stereo speakers, faster charging and vapor-chamber cooling.

Shared features across both models

Both phones have Always-On OLED displays with ProMotion, Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, an 18-megapixel Center Stage front camera, Wi-Fi 7 and Apple Intelligence support.

The Air is lighter and slightly larger

The iPhone Air weighs 46 grams less than the iPhone 18 Pro and has a slightly larger 6.5-inch display. Its polished titanium frame and frosted glass back may matter more to some buyers than the Pro's specification advantages.

The Air, however, has only one rear camera, weaker speakers and shorter battery life. The iPhone 18 Pro Max offers a 6.9-inch screen and still longer battery life, but weighs 84 grams more than the Air.

Discounts can change the calculation

Retail pricing makes the Air more competitive. Earlier this year, an unlocked 256GB model was available for $899.99; at that price, the gap to the $1,199 iPhone 18 Pro is about $300.

Reports point to a future Air update

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman expects the next iPhone Air in spring 2027. Reports say an Ultra Wide camera has reached advanced testing, while analyst Jeff Pu expects a smaller Dynamic Island and an A20 Pro chip.

Leaker Digital Chat Station has claimed a 3,500mAh battery, up from 3,149mAh in the current model, and The Information has reported that vapor-chamber cooling could be added. Apple has not confirmed these reported specifications.
