Grand Theft Auto 6 was delayed from May to November partly because of the scale of work required for non-player characters in the fictional state of Leonida. Rockstar co-head of development Rob Nelson told Bloomberg about the production challenge.
Nelson said the projections for the number of NPCs were “horrifying.” To manage the workload, Rockstar created a separate studio in Los Angeles staffed with writers.
The reason for the date change
Development co-head Phil Hooker said the delay was decided after it became clear that some parts of the game would not be ready to the required standard. The team could have met the original schedule, he said, but the result would not have been the game the developers wanted to make.
Rockstar initially attributed the delay to finishing GTA 6 at the expected quality level. The supplied material does not specify the new release month.
The report says additional writers and producers were brought in to handle the game’s extensive writing and world-building workload. It gives no other confirmed reasons for the delay.
