Apple says the cover layer over the iPhone Duo’s foldable inner display can be removed and replaced. Kate Bergeron, Apple’s vice president of hardware engineering, disclosed the detail in an interview with content creator Angelica Siciliani Fendi.

In the US, AppleCare+ customers will pay $19 to replace the layer. Apple has not disclosed the out-of-pocket price for customers without coverage.

The layer conceals the display crease

The nano-texture layer helps hide the crease at the center of the inner screen. Bergeron said Apple carried out significant engineering work to keep it in good condition for as long as possible, but it can be replaced if it wears down or the crease becomes more visible.

Official replacement will likely be limited to Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers. It remains unclear whether customers will be able to remove the layer themselves easily.

Pre-order and store dates

US pre-orders begin October 16 at 5 a.m. Pacific Time (12:00 UTC). The iPhone Duo reaches stores on October 23.
