US President Donald Trump said Ukraine and Russia had agreed to stop attacks on energy facilities. He said the arrangement was effective immediately but provided no details.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky initially said the announcement was news to him. He later said Kyiv was ready not to strike Russian energy infrastructure if Russia showed the same readiness.

Russia has not publicly confirmed the arrangement. After Trump’s statement, Zelensky reported strikes on energy facilities in Kyiv and the Kharkiv region.

Kyiv awaits details of talks

Zelensky said Ukrainian officials were waiting for clear details of the US dialogue with Russia. He also accused Russia of attacking Ukrainian energy facilities after the US president’s announcement.

According to Zelensky, a drone strike on a power plant in Kyiv caused power cuts. He also reported strikes on energy facilities in the Kharkiv region.

Energy strikes have continued for months

Ukraine and Russia have exchanged attacks on energy infrastructure for months. Moscow says the facilities it strikes are legitimate targets because they support Ukraine’s military operations.

Zelensky has said Ukrainian attacks deep inside Russia are intended to reduce Moscow’s ability to finance the war. The strikes have disrupted energy supplies on both sides.

Trump has also urged Ukraine to stop attacking Russian oil infrastructure. That request is linked to a deal to release Russian diesel to US and global markets, temporarily lifting sanctions on Russian imports.

The diesel arrangement has been criticised by Zelensky, European officials and politicians from both major US parties. Seven senators — three Democrats and four Republicans — said it conflicted with a law banning Russian energy imports until Moscow ends its aggression against Ukraine.

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham, France, Canada and the European Union supported Trump’s call for an energy ceasefire. UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting had earlier said Britain did not support the diesel deal.
