A judge in the Lindsay Clancy murder case refused to declare her not guilty of killing her three children. William Sullivan issued the ruling nearly a month after her first trial ended without a verdict.

Sullivan said prosecutors had presented physical and circumstantial evidence that would allow jurors to determine whether Clancy was responsible for the killings beyond a reasonable doubt.

Defense and prosecution arguments

Attorney Kevin Reddington had asked the court to find that prosecutors lacked sufficient evidence linking Clancy to the deaths. Prosecutors opposed the motion and dismissed the defense argument as baseless.

At the first trial, the defense did not dispute that Clancy killed the children at the family home in 2023. Instead, Reddington argued that a mental illness meant she could not be held criminally responsible.

Dispute over Clancy’s mental state

The defense relied on postpartum psychosis, a rare condition. Prosecutors acknowledged that Clancy had mental-health problems, underwent months of treatment and stayed in a psychiatric hospital, but argued that she understood what she was doing when she strangled the children and later tried to kill herself.

The first trial ended in a mistrial after the jury failed to reach a verdict. Jurors voted 11-1 in favor of acquitting Clancy on the murder charges.
