Apple has introduced the HomePod mini 2, a compact smart speaker with new colours, improved audio features and planned Siri AI support.
Siri AI will arrive in a future software update, according to the device description. The assistant is designed to understand context, answer questions across a wide range of topics, search for music and connect with many apps.
360-degree audio and Apple S10
The HomePod mini 2 can deliver 360-degree sound through a single speaker, a stereo pair or a home audio system. When used with the new Apple TV 4K, it supports surround sound across all four speakers.
The device uses the Apple S10 chip and computational audio technology. The system analyses playback in real time to optimise dynamic range, volume and other acoustic effects.
The HomePod mini 2 can also serve as a speaker for a Mac during films, games, FaceTime and video calls. Sound Glow turns the top of the device into a light visualisation that responds to music, its low and high frequencies, and the album artwork.
Voice control and personalisation
The speaker recognises up to six people by voice and lets users control connected smart-home devices. Voice commands can lock the front door, close the garage, lower blinds, adjust the thermostat and turn off lights.
When integrated with an iPhone or iPad that supports Apple Intelligence, the HomePod mini can use personalisation to help find files. It can also work with messages and timers while playing music and performing other tasks.
