Widow’s Bay sets Emmy record for freshman comedy with 14 wins

Widow’s Bay won 14 awards at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series. The show became the most decorated freshman comedy in Emmy history.

The series also led all programs in performance wins this year. Matthew Rhys won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, while Kate O’Flynn and Stephen Root won in the supporting acting categories.

Apple TV finished the ceremony with 29 wins, the highest total among networks and streaming services. It remained home to the year’s most Emmy-winning series for the second consecutive year.

Widow’s Bay takes major comedy awards

Katie Dippold won for comedy writing, while Hiro Murai won for comedy directing. Apple TV said Murai became the first Asian director to win in the category.

Previously announced awards for Widow’s Bay included Betty Gilpin’s guest-actress win, along with honors for production design, casting, cinematography, music, sound editing and sound mixing.

Apple TV’s other winners

Pluribus earned six awards, including lead actress for Rhea Seehorn and writing for Vince Gilligan. Slow Horses won one award, for drama directing for Saul Metzstein.

Margo’s Got Money Troubles won three awards, and Palm Royale also took three. Apple TV added two wins on the first night for the documentary or nonfiction series Mr. Scorsese and the commercial “I’m Not Remarkable.”

Apple TV received 89 nominations across 15 programs. The Television Academy announced the winners at the ceremony on September 14.
