Volvo Cars is expanding its partnership with NVIDIA to develop automated-driving technology for future vehicles. The system is intended to handle complex conditions ranging from highways and urban streets to parking situations.
The technology will first appear in a next-generation Volvo vehicle. The company included it in its largest-ever product push.
NVIDIA’s vehicle computing architecture
Volvo will combine its safety systems and engineering expertise with NVIDIA Hyperion, Halos OS and the Alpamayo Stack driving software. The partners plan a gradual introduction of eyes-off and mind-off driving capabilities.
Volvo said the work draws on nearly a century of safety research and a human-centric approach. Volvo President and CEO Håkan Samuelsson described the combination of the company’s safety expertise with NVIDIA’s artificial-intelligence technology as an opportunity to build safer cars.
The companies’ collaboration dates back to 2017. Volvo said it is bringing NVIDIA’s advanced computing capabilities into its next generation of electric cars as part of its development of software-defined vehicles.
NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang said the partnership will combine Volvo’s vehicle-safety systems with the Hyperion and Halos platforms to make driving safer and easier.
