‘The Trial of Alec Baldwin’ Trailer Covers the ‘Rust’ Shooting and Legal Battle

A trailer has been released for Rory Kennedy’s documentary ‘The Trial of Alec Baldwin.’ The film examines cinematographer Halyna Hutchins’ death during production of the Western ‘Rust,’ the media response and Baldwin’s legal case.

Hutchins died on October 21, 2021, after a prop gun held by Baldwin discharged. Kennedy received exclusive access to the actor and began filming while he was facing criminal charges.

Filming continued through the trial

The documentary follows events through Baldwin’s July 2024 trial in Santa Fe. The judge dismissed the case with prejudice after determining that evidence had been withheld.

The film’s logline says that, after the shooting was initially viewed as an accident, public discussion turned to responsibility, guilt, punishment and justice. It also examines how public figures are judged in real time.

Kennedy’s stated focus

Kennedy described the project as a story about the state of the judicial system. She said the ‘Rust’ case raised questions extending beyond the events on the set.

‘The Trial of Alec Baldwin’ opens in theaters October 1.
