Steam flooded with idler releases: 54 new 'idle' games in one week, many look similar

During the week ending September 6, 54 games tagged “idler” launched on Steam. There are 4,314 idler-tagged titles on the platform overall.

Many of the new releases include AI disclosures: Vespera notes “AI generated images and other AI made components,” Nexus states “Some assets were created using AI,” and Path of the Idle Cultivator reports using AI “for UI and some translations.”

Observers highlight that a large share of these games share very similar UIs — comparable layouts and a tendency toward a dark blue background — and have described the wave as an influx of “AI slop” in the genre.

Some recent idlers show distinctive qualities: Next Reign: Kingdom features handmade pixel art and atmospheric music, We Need More Humans! presents an unusual premise, and Zad Archery has nearly 700 “mostly positive” reviews. None of them approach the top-played idler titles: Bongo Cat (135,803 players), Task Bar Hero (66,292) and Banana (3,628).

SteamDB data shows a sharp rise in idler releases over recent years: 100 in 2020, 647 in 2024, 1,033 last year, and 1,811 so far in 2025. Additionally, 1,119 are listed as coming soon and 380 as TBA.

Writers conclude that while there are worthwhile entries in the genre, the current flood of simple, AI-assisted “numbers go up” games represents a widespread repetition of design and assets.
