Jagex announces RuneScape 4, an MMO sequel that grew from a Dragonwilds expansion
Jagex announced the working title RuneScape 4 at its annual RuneFest convention. The project began as an expansion for the survival game Dragonwilds before playtester feedback led the studio toward a standalone MMO.
Jagex announced a new MMO follow-up to RuneScape under the working title RuneScape 4 at its annual RuneFest convention, held this weekend.
The announcement included a short teaser showing a medieval town in a green valley, floating islands, a three-headed dragon attack and a wizard welcoming a new adventurer.
The project began as Dragonwilds content
RuneScape 4 was initially planned as an expansion for the survival game Dragonwilds. MMORPG.com reported that playtesters asked for a more traditional MMO using the survival game’s setting and visual style, prompting Jagex to develop it as a separate new game.
The project is being built on Unreal Engine, although Jagex has not said whether it is using version 5 or the upcoming version 6. The original Dragonwilds expansion was targeting 2027; the broader scope is expected to push that timing back, but no replacement date has been announced.
RuneScape 4’s place in the series
The teaser combines elements associated with RuneScape 3 and Old School RuneScape. RuneScape 2 launched in 2004 with full 3D rendering, while Old School RuneScape is based on the 2007-era version of RS2. RuneScape 3 followed in 2013 with overhauled art and systems.
