Atlus will likely remake Persona 1 and 2, says producer Kazuhisa Wada

Series producer Kazuhisa Wada told Rock Paper Shotgun that Atlus will "probably eventually" produce a remaster or remake of Persona 1 and Persona 2 as a form of cultural preservation. Wada said creators have a duty to keep their work from being lost and available in the modern day.

The original Persona (Persona: Revelations) launched on the PlayStation in 1996; it received a light re-release in 2009 for the PlayStation Portable, and there is a 1999 PC port that never released in the west. The game mixes first-person dungeon exploration with isometric overworld travel and is stylistically closer to older Shin Megami Tensei titles; the social links system did not appear until Persona 3.

Persona 2: Innocent Sin arrived in 1999 on the original PlayStation and replaced first-person dungeon crawling with third-person exploration. Wada did not provide specific timelines or formats, speaking generally about remasters or remakes as preservation efforts.

PC Gamer's piece also noted several other Atlus titles remain tied to older hardware. Examples include a flawed port of Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne that requires a mod to remove a 30 fps lock, last year's comprehensive remake of Raidou which reworked its combat, and the absence of reissues for Digital Devil Saga and its sequel.

The article highlighted that Shin Megami Tensei IV remains a Nintendo 3DS exclusive, while SMT 3 and SMT 5 are available on PC. Those comments express the author's preference that Atlus address PS2-era titles and other locked releases after any Persona 1 and 2 projects. No concrete release dates or formats were announced by Atlus.
