Blizzard pauses Diablo 4 expansions as team focuses on seasons and Diablo 5

Blizzard said no further expansions are planned for Diablo 4 at present, and the development team is prioritizing seasonal updates and work toward Diablo 5.

Diablo game director Brent Gibson told PC Gamer that the team is “all focused on [Diablo 4] seasons and getting to Diablo 5.” He said the studio feels it completed the “Story of Hatred” and is moving toward telling the “Story of Terror.”

Blizzard announced at BlizzCon that Diablo 5 will take place 100 years after the events of Diablo 4. Gibson said that gap gives the team “a lot of room” to continue Diablo 4’s story through seasons en route to Diablo 5, but he also said they do not yet have a perfect plan and want to respond to player reactions season by season.

Asked whether Diablo 4 and Diablo 5 might run concurrently like Path of Exile and its sequel, Gibson indicated Diablo 4 support will continue “for a very long time” while players remain active, citing Diablo 2 Resurrected receiving a new class earlier in the year as an example of ongoing support across the franchise.

Blizzard did not detail exact forms of future Diablo 4 support or give a release date for Diablo 5 in the material cited.
