Jagex has announced RS4, a new MMORPG set in the RuneScape universe. The project is still in early development and is a few years away from release.

The game is being built in Unreal Engine and will launch as a standalone experience alongside RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, and RuneScape: Dragonwilds.

Ashenfall will be the starting region

RS4 will be set in Gielinor during the Sixth Age. The adventure will begin in Ashenfall, a region in north-eastern Gielinor previously explored in RuneScape: Dragonwilds.

The game takes place years after the destruction of the Dragon Queen Kuldra in Dragonwilds. Jagex said Ashenfall is only the beginning, with the story eventually able to expand into familiar and new parts of Gielinor.

The name and details remain provisional

RS4 is a working title reflecting the project’s status as the fourth generation of RuneScape, but the final name may change. Platforms, account systems, membership, progression, combat and skills have not yet been announced.

Jagex plans to share more about the world, game and development team next year. The company also wants to involve the community early, building on principles of integrity, permanent progression and community-driven development.
