A new Forest of Dean Baby Bank hub has opened at The Ark Cafe in Newent, Gloucestershire, providing free children’s products to people who need them.

Lead volunteer Helen Carter said the hub is open to everyone and parents will not be means-tested. Available items include nappies, baby wipes, breast pumps, hats and swimwear, while larger goods such as cots can be sourced from a warehouse in Cinderford.

The hub is open every Tuesday from 09:30 to 11:30 UK time (09:30 UTC). Parents often collect items for their children while donating clothes and other goods that are no longer needed.

Demand for clothing and festive boxes

Autumn clothing bundles are currently in demand. Volunteers have also begun preparing Christmas boxes containing festive clothing, blankets and shoes.

Carter said some families may not describe themselves as struggling, but support from the baby bank can free up money for activities with their children. She also thanked people who donate items to the service.

Parents describe rising costs

Kylie, a Newent mother making her first visit, said children’s clothing, food, nappies and wipes were consistently expensive. Volunteer Isabel said she had previously received food parcels and clothing and now wanted to give back to the centre.

The National Childbirth Trust’s latest Parent Experience Report said nearly half of parents felt financially worse off after having a baby. The figure rose to about six in ten among self-employed, unemployed and part-time employed parents.
