Twelve South has released AirFly Drive, a compact adapter for using CarPlay without a USB-C cable. It plugs into a vehicle’s data-capable USB port and connects to an iPhone over Wi-Fi.
The device works with any iPhone running iOS 10 or later and vehicles with factory support for wired CarPlay. AirFly Drive costs $39.99 in the U.S. and is available to order in white or black.
Automatic connection for two iPhones
After a one-time pairing, the adapter reconnects automatically whenever the vehicle starts. It requires no app, account or charging.
A button lets users switch between two paired iPhones with one press. Before setup, the iPhone must be removed from the vehicle’s previous connection by selecting “Forget This Device” in the vehicle’s Bluetooth settings.
Compact body with USB adapters
AirFly Drive has a small aluminum cube-shaped body with a USB-A port. A USB-C adapter is included, and the device is designed to remain plugged into the vehicle.
Similar wired-to-wireless CarPlay adapters are available from other brands. Twelve South markets AirFly Drive for vehicles that already support factory wired CarPlay.
