Jaguar Land Rover to cut 4,000 jobs over two years without public funding

Jaguar Land Rover will cut 4,000 jobs over two years. UK business secretary Jonathan Reynolds said the government would not provide public funding to support the company.

The cuts form part of a cost-reduction programme intended to deliver £1.7bn in annual savings. JLR wants to break even on cash after selling 300,000 vehicles, rather than 350,000.

Cuts will focus on salaried roles

JLR employs 44,000 people worldwide, including 34,000 in the UK. The company said the reductions would be concentrated among salaried and management staff, limiting the effect on hourly-paid factory workers.

The decision follows a difficult year for European carmakers. JLR has been affected by Donald Trump’s tariffs, luxury taxes in China, higher raw-material costs and a major cyber-attack.

The company nevertheless says it expects double-digit growth as it prepares to launch five new models. In its May results, JLR said investment spending would remain at £18bn over the five-year period from financial year 2024.

Government to focus on retraining

Reynolds said carmakers traditionally adjust workforce numbers according to business and product cycles. After talks with unions, the government is expected to assist with retraining and re-employment.

The source notes that public support could be justified for new battery factories, major capital projects or measures to reduce the UK’s industrial electricity costs. JLR, however, presents the job cuts as a measure to remain competitive.

JLR’s next major corporate test will be competition in the US luxury-car market. The new electric Range Rover starts at £154,070, and the company’s next two years have been described as critical.
