iPhone reaches record 22% Q3 shipment share as smartphone market falls 20%
Apple captured 22% of global smartphone shipments in Q3 2026, even as its own shipment volume declined. Counterpoint Research said the overall market fell 20% year over year to its lowest third-quarter level in 14 years.
Apple raised its share of global smartphone shipments to 22% in Q3 2026, the first time it has exceeded 20% in a third quarter, Counterpoint Research reported.
The global smartphone market nevertheless declined 20% year over year, reaching its lowest shipment level for a third quarter in 14 years. The report did not provide an absolute shipment total.
Samsung remains the market leader
Samsung held first place with a 23% share, one percentage point ahead of Apple. Xiaomi followed with 10%, OPPO with 9%, and vivo with 8%; all three recorded lower shares than in Q3 2025.
Memory constraints weigh on shipments
Counterpoint attributed the market decline to limited memory availability and rising component prices. The research firm said this was the second consecutive quarter in which the industry bore the full impact of the memory crisis.
Apple’s shipment performance
Apple’s own shipment volume also fell. Counterpoint said the main factor was the absence of a base iPhone 18 model, which led to a smaller launch-month channel fill than the complete iPhone 17 lineup had achieved a year earlier. Apple also joined industry-wide price increases, although their effect was limited to the final weeks of the quarter.
The iPhone 18 Pro models had a stronger launch than their predecessors, particularly in China and India. Continued momentum for the iPhone 17 series also helped offset part of the decline.
Counterpoint expects further pressure on price-sensitive segments from higher device prices and limited component supplies. The firm said a meaningful recovery in shipment volumes is unlikely until costs decline and supply conditions improve.
