Rockstar says Grand Theft Auto 6 will not pull back from satire, but make it broader and more grotesque. The comments appeared in a cover feature for Love, a fashion magazine published twice a year, focused on Lucia, Jason and the game.

The game will combine a realistic setting with exaggerated versions of modern life. Examples mentioned in the feature include radio talk shows, advertising and an automated political campaign phone call.

Satire beyond a simple reflection

James Horton, the game’s writing director for open world, said players moving through the city would hear fragments of many conversations while new details continually filled their view. Rupert Humphries, senior vice president of narrative, said a recreation of today’s world needed to be “more over the top, more insane, more in your face.”

Humphries said Rockstar wanted more than a direct reflection of reality, aiming for a world that is satirical, larger than life and grotesque. Rob Nelson, Rockstar North’s head of development and co-studio head, added that the game would sometimes set realism aside for player convenience.

Lucia and Jason as a team

The feature also discusses Lucia, the series’ first fully voiced woman protagonist, and her relationship with Jason. Writer Elizabeth Gauvey-Kern described both protagonists as vulnerable, tough and flawed, with the ability to be wrong and learn from each other.

Writer Alexa D’Agostino said focusing on characters with their own wants should make them “perfectly imperfect” while still feeling real.
