GTA 6’s Miami Heat promotion leaves several PC Gamer editors baffled

Rockstar has partnered with the Miami Heat for a GTA 6 promotion called “A Night in Vice City.” As part of the event, the NBA team will temporarily use the Vice City branding.

PC Gamer audience development manager Cameron Bald shared a post about the promotion from the fan account GTA 6 Countdown at 8:35 a.m. Central Time on Friday, October 2.

UK editors did not recognize the team

Several PC Gamer staff members based in the UK said they had not heard of the Miami Heat. Editor Fraser Brown called the basketball promotion unusually niche, while Joshua Wolens and Sean Martin also admitted they could not confidently identify the team.

Brown suggested the campaign might land differently with American audiences. Bald argued that it could target players still using PS4 who may need another reason to return to gaming for GTA 6.

The Miami Heat are an NBA team with three championship titles. LeBron James also played for the team during the 2010s.

The discussion spread across the newsroom

Other PC Gamer staff joined the conversation. US-based senior editor Christopher Livingston, who has lived in the United States all his life, said he also might not have been able to place the Heat before the promotion.

Several editors were more familiar with the Miami Dolphins because of the film “Ace Ventura.” The Chicago Bulls were repeatedly described as a more recognizable American sports brand.

PC Gamer presented the exchange as a humorous newsroom discussion about the international recognition of sports brands used in GTA 6 marketing.
