A shooting at a block party in Vienna, Georgia, killed two people and injured 35 others. The incident occurred at about 01:30 local time (05:30 GMT) on Sunday.
Officials said more than 50 shots were fired into a crowd of about 1,000 people. Two men, aged 20 and 23, were pronounced dead at the scene, while 25 injured people were taken to several nearby hospitals; some were in critical condition.
Shooting during homecoming celebration
The gathering was held during a Dooly High School homecoming celebration, but the school said it was not a school-sponsored event.
Dooly County Sheriff's Office personnel had been positioned at both ends of the crowd because a large turnout was expected. People ran in different directions after the gunfire began.
Investigation remains active
The victims ranged in age from 14 to 51. The two men who died were found several blocks from the shooting scene on Pine Street.
No arrests had been made and authorities had not given a possible motive. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation joined the case at the request of the Dooly County Sheriff's Office and said the operation remained active and ongoing. The bureau's medical examiner's office will perform autopsies on both victims.
