Renee Good’s partner, Becca Good, and her brother, Brent Ganger, filed two federal lawsuits on Thursday over the Minneapolis woman’s death during protests.
Good was shot on January 7 inside her car by ICE officer Jonathan Ross. Ross said he acted in self-defense, while video clips cited in the lawsuits show the vehicle moving away from him.
Wrongful-death lawsuit
One lawsuit seeks damages for Good’s suffering and the losses experienced by her family. Becca Good, who was standing a few feet from the vehicle, alleges that Ross fired three rounds into it as she watched her partner die.
Good was a US citizen, a mother of three and a participant in protests against the deployment of thousands of ICE agents in Minneapolis under the Trump administration’s mass-deportation policy. The Department of Homeland Security described her actions as “an act of domestic terrorism.”
Claims against senior officials
The second lawsuit alleges that federal officials and immigration agents conspired to interfere with civil rights. It names Ross, former homeland security secretary Kristi Noem, White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller and former border patrol officer Gregory Bovino among the defendants.
Good’s death and the killing of nurse Alex Pretti, who was shot by an immigration agent in Minneapolis two weeks later, triggered nationwide anger. Then-deputy attorney general Todd Blanche said he saw no basis for a civil-rights investigation, but the Justice Department later examined Becca Good’s connections with protest groups; at least 10 prosecutors resigned after the shootings.
The lawsuits are among the first major civil actions filed in Minnesota against Trump’s deportation campaign. After the two deaths, the president withdrew agents from Minnesota, and no comparable deployment to a major US city has occurred since.
