The film adapts the 2012 visual novel by Kinoko Nasu and was developed by Type-Moon, the studio behind the Fate franchise. It follows high school student Aoko Aozaki, who is secretly an apprentice magician living in the modern world.
Aoko lives with her housemate Alice Kuonji and trains to become a full-fledged Magician; after she meets a boy, the story of one young girl's path to becoming a witch unfolds.
