Kernel Hearts launches on Xbox with a post-apocalyptic blend of Japan and Argentina

Action RPG Kernel Hearts is now available on Xbox. The game follows four girls fighting angels to save a world devastated by catastrophe.

The project was developed by Argentina-based Ephemera Games with Whitethorn Games. Japanese culture shapes its art, story and language, while Argentine influences appear in character details and everyday life.

A Post-Apocalyptic Patagonia

The story takes place in post-apocalyptic Patagonia, where survivors are trying to rebuild a collapsed world. Kernel Hearts began as a game-jam concept in 2020, while its final style developed over nearly six years.

The developers combine the expansive storytelling associated with action RPGs and JRPGs with shorter play sessions and roguelike elements. The format is designed to let players experience the story in smaller segments.

Four Heroes, Four Combat Styles

The M.A.H.O.U unit consists of Fernet, Spika, Laika and Dolce. Their abilities, animations, silhouettes and attack rhythms are intended to communicate each character’s personality immediately.

Fernet uses swords and spirits, making her the most versatile fighter. Spika fights at close range with a katana and disciplined attacks, Laika relies on physical strength and a massive sword, while Dolce incorporates performance and dance into her combat style.

Solo and Multiplayer Play

Kernel Hearts can be completed solo or experienced in multiplayer. The developers also view co-op as an important part of the game because its story centers on a squad working together against a shared threat.
