The Australian Football League grand final set a viewership record for broadcaster Seven and became Australia’s most-watched television program of the year, the network said.

The national television audience exceeded 4.5 million, while the broadcast reached 6.5 million people.

The pre-game event featuring Kylie Minogue reached more than 4.3 million viewers, up 20% from the previous year.

Chris Jones, Southern Cross Media’s director of sport, said viewers followed the coverage from its opening outside the MCG through the match and the premiership celebrations.

After the final, the Brisbane team, which secured its third premiership, celebrated with fans at Brunswick St Oval in Fitzroy North.
