Apple is reportedly preparing a major MacBook Pro overhaul that could arrive in October or November. The reported changes include a switch from mini-LED to OLED, touchscreen input and a redesigned chassis.
The update could produce the first Mac with both an OLED display and a touchscreen. OLED may deliver deeper blacks and higher contrast because individual pixels can be turned off completely.
Touch-optimized macOS and camera redesign
According to Bloomberg, Apple is adapting macOS for touch input. Interface controls would enlarge during finger interaction, while pinch-to-zoom, faster scrolling and other familiar gestures would also be supported.
Apple is also reportedly replacing the current FaceTime camera notch with a hole-punch cutout. The MacBook Pro may additionally receive Dynamic Island for notifications and Live Activities.
Thinner and lighter chassis
The company is said to be making the notebook thinner again, although it is not yet clear whether any ports would be removed. The source links the change partly to Apple Silicon, which could allow a slimmer design without the same efficiency trade-offs associated with older Intel models.
The new models are also expected to be “significantly” lighter. Mark Gurman said Apple had reduced the size of internal parts and rearranged components to make the computer easier to carry.
M5 chips instead of expected M6 Pro
The models were initially expected to use M6 Pro and M6 Max chips. New reports instead point to M5 Pro and M5 Max, the processors used in the current MacBook Pro lineup.
The reported change follows claims that Apple may skip M6 Pro, M6 Max and M6 Ultra variants. The company is said to be focusing its higher-end plans on M7 Pro and M7 Max chips, with major AI-performance improvements reportedly in mind.
Mark Gurman has also speculated that Apple could call the laptops MacBook Ultra to signal their position at the top of the range. That naming remains unconfirmed.
