Apple showcases new parental controls in iOS 27

Apple published a video highlighting new child-safety features in iOS 27. The update simplifies Child Account setup and expands parents’ control over device access.

Parents can allow or block app categories, approve download requests through Ask to Buy, and decide which websites children may visit in Safari. Separate settings control who children can call and message.

Screen time and communication controls

Communication Safety in Messages and FaceTime detects and blocks images and videos containing nudity or violence. Time Allowances and Schedules let parents set limits by day, hour and activity, including restrictions during school hours.

Parents can also pause access entirely with one tap during family events or allow unlimited screen time.

Update follows regulatory pressure

The features became available September 14 with the launch of iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS Golden Gate. Every device in a Family Sharing group must run the latest software for the updated Screen Time feature to work.

Apple introduced the controls as it faces regulatory pressure in the UK, the U.S. and Australia. The UK has called for device-level protections, the U.S. Kids Internet and Digital Safety Act is in the Senate, and Australia has already barred children under 16 from creating accounts on certain social media platforms.
