Meta’s Muse reportedly accessed Mac messages despite a user’s refusal

Tech writer Jason Aten said Meta’s Muse agent synced messages on his test Mac despite his refusal to grant access. He said Muse attributed the result to text visible in notifications, but his investigation found the app had synced data from the local Messages database.

Tech writer Jason Aten said Meta’s Muse app accessed his messages on a test Mac even though he declined permission to read messages, his calendar and other personal data.

After Aten discussed new iPhones with podcast co-host Stephen Robles, Muse sent a notification suggesting that the conversation could become a column and offered to prepare research. Aten said he had not asked the app to perform that task.

Muse synced the Messages database

When Aten questioned the app, Muse said it had used only message text visible in notifications. Aten said his subsequent investigation found that Muse had synced data from the local Messages database and uploaded it as a data source.

On his device, synchronization reached row 187,462 of the messages database. Aten did not determine how many messages that represented, but said the amount exceeded the app’s explanation.

Other users have also reported serious privacy problems involving Muse. Meta has attributed some of those cases to a bug.

Muse launched for iPhone and Mac as a personal AI agent that can perform tasks on a user’s behalf. Aten tested it on a separate computer rather than his own Mac.
