Microsoft confirmed a serious bug in Windows 11 update KB5124010 that can disrupt some games and applications. The failure is linked to decoding AC-3 audio, also known as Dolby Digital.

The update was released in September as an optional package for Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2. Affected software may close unexpectedly or fail to launch.

How the bug affects games

In some games, the issue prevents startup; in others, it causes crashes during play. The failure may appear only after certain features are used, including music playback. Microsoft also listed media players and some productivity applications among potentially affected software.

The company added the issue to the Windows 11 status dashboard and said it is working on a fix. No official patch is available yet; Microsoft expects to include one in the next update.

Users on social media have also reported performance drops and Windows startup problems after installing KB5124010. Microsoft has officially confirmed only the AC-3-related failure so far.

Microsoft said many modern applications decode this type of audio independently rather than relying on Windows, so they should not be affected.
