Tesla unveiled a new version of its Roadster electric sports car in Texas with thrusters that lifted the vehicle into the air during a demonstration.

The car drove up a steep ramp, went airborne, spun in mid-air and landed using air jets. SpaceX, the aerospace company owned by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, helped develop the model at one of its facilities.

Musk said an audience was needed to prove that the vehicle “is not AI”. Before the presentation, he told viewers they were going to see “some crazy stuff”.

The demonstration does not mean flying cars will soon be available on public roads. BBC technology editor Zoe Kleinman said there were several reasons that was unlikely, but the source did not specify them.
