Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s campaign is set during North Korea’s invasion of South Korea. Players take the role of Park Hyun Jun, a conscripted South Korean soldier caught in the fighting with a small unit.

In a parallel storyline, Capt John Price has gone rogue and teams up with cartel boss Valeria Garza to pursue Makarov. Infinity Ward narrative director Jeff Negus said the interweaving of the two strands drives the story.

Connecting story and combat

Negus said the studio aimed to make quieter character scenes and large-scale action work together, with gameplay mechanics serving the narrative. He described the goal as letting players feel what the characters feel and become part of the same story.

Consultants and script revisions

Infinity Ward brought in military and cultural consultants. Negus said some of the actors had completed conscription in Korea, while dialect coach June Yoon helped the team distinguish between speech in North and South Korea.

The team maps the story through levels and key beats, but can rearrange them as development continues. Negus said ideas are debated, analysed and tested before they are finalised in the script.
