A purported trailer for a new Mass Effect game, titled Mass Effect: Universe, appeared on Reddit after reports that BioWare had closed and cancelled its next Mass Effect project.

The footage’s authenticity was initially unknown. PC Gamer staffers noted its music, visual style and what they believed could be Liara’s voice.

Claim about a completed trailer

Several hours before the video appeared, a Reddit user claiming to be an EA employee said a trailer for the new game had been produced. The user also suggested the project was further along than widely believed.

Jason Schreier of Bloomberg later wrote on Bluesky that the footage was real and that BioWare had worked on the game until the studio’s closure.

Details visible in the footage

PC Gamer’s description found no obvious signs of AI generation. The new protagonist appears reminiscent of Shepard, but the N7 insignia is absent from the uniform; Liara may also be represented through a voice performance.

The video’s provenance was still being checked, although Schreier’s statement provided a journalist’s confirmation of its authenticity. The source provides no further official details about the game.
