Brandon Thomas, a programmer and head of ArtCraft, has released seven free open-source applications designed as alternatives to popular Adobe software, including Photoshop and Premiere Pro.

The applications are written in Rust with help from Claude Opus 5.5. Thomas aimed to reproduce Adobe-like interfaces, keyboard shortcuts and functionality without using the original source code.

Platforms and licenses

The projects are distributed under the MIT and Apache 2.0 licenses. They are intended to run natively on Windows, Linux and macOS, while some also support browsers through WebAssembly.

Thomas said the idea followed his experience of receiving penalties from Adobe after cancelling a subscription. He added that ArtCraft’s income allows him to continue funding development of similar applications.

Compatibility remains limited

The projects are still at an early development stage. Testers have reported problems with core editing features, keyboard shortcuts and performance.

In the PhotoCraft roadmap, Thomas acknowledges that compatibility is currently below 50%, with approximately 25–35% of the functionality complete. He initially promised full parity with native applications within a month, but later revised the target to 99% within several months.
