Google will contribute $1.2 million to Aguas Andinas to support water resilience in Chile’s Maipo River Basin, a vital watershed supplying Santiago.

The funding will help line 2.5 kilometers of the Unidos de Buin Canal Association’s main irrigation canal with concrete. The canal is currently an unlined earthen channel, which allows water to be lost through seepage.

Canal project targets water losses

The concrete lining is intended to leave more water available for local agricultural irrigation. The infrastructure work is also expected to reduce sedimentation and erosion, improving water quality.

Google estimates that the project could save up to 7.4 million cubic meters of water annually over its lifespan.

The company said its water stewardship efforts in 2025 replenished more water in the Maipo basin than was consumed by its data center in Quilicura, Chile.
