Google has introduced Fitbit Edge, a fitness tracker positioned between the screenless Fitbit Air and the Google Pixel Watch smartwatch. The new device combines an OLED display and GPS with selected smartwatch features.
The tracker costs $179.99 in the US and £159.99 in the UK. Google says it can run for up to seven days on one charge, while a full recharge takes about 90 minutes.
OLED display and physical controls
Fitbit Edge uses a hybrid OLED display that Google describes as the largest and brightest screen on its fitness trackers. Its viewing area is 46% larger than on previous Fitbit models, and the screen is designed for use in direct sunlight.
The 11.5mm-thick body includes metal elements and a physical side button. Its Tiles-based interface does not run full Wear OS, but supports call and notification controls as well as Google Maps.
GPS and health features
Built-in GPS can record routes, speed and distance during running, cycling, swimming and hiking without relying on a phone’s GPS. The tracker also automatically recognises up to 100 types of physical activity; Google plans to bring the feature to Fitbit Air later.
Other features include sleep monitoring, menstrual-cycle tracking, an electrocardiogram and Google Health tools, including Health Guardian. Fitbit Edge also supports an AI coach that analyses activity and provides training recommendations.
Replaceable battery and bands
The Fitbit Edge battery can be replaced after it wears out. The tracker also supports interchangeable bands, including Active Sport, the micro-adjustable Performance Loop and Metal Links.
