On Android, a phone number may be automatically linked to every Google account signed in on the same device. This includes work, alternative and temporary profiles, not only the primary account.

The setting is enabled by default and can operate without a separate confirmation from the user. Some Reddit users reported receiving unexpected verification emails, a development also covered by TechRadar.

Why Google verifies phone numbers

Google’s official documentation says the setting allows Google and mobile operators to periodically reverify phone numbers. The company connects the process with account recovery, RCS messaging, emergency features and Quick Share.

The number can nevertheless be added to every account signed in on the device. When the feature is enabled, a newly added account can also inherit links to phone numbers stored on the smartphone, while a new number may be added to all active profiles.

How to disable automatic verification

On the device, open Settings > Google > All services > Phone Number Verification and turn off “Automatically verify phone numbers.” Menu names may vary by device.

Turning off the feature does not remove links that already exist. To delete a number from a specific account, open Google’s personal information page, select “Contact info” > “Phone”, and remove the number from the relevant profiles.

Some Reddit users claim the setting can turn itself back on after being disabled. Google has not officially explained the reason for the change or said whether it plans to revise it.
