d4r brings DLSS 4.5 to Radeon RX 9000, but support remains experimental

The d4r 0.1.2 update adds native DLSS 4 and 4.5 kernels for Radeon RDNA 4 cards. The implementation works in DirectX 12 games under Linux or Proton, but its RDNA 4 performance has not yet been tested.

Modder Countervolts has updated the d4r utility to run NVIDIA DLSS 3, DLSS 4 and DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution on Radeon graphics cards. RDNA 4 support covers several Radeon RX 9000 models but remains experimental.

d4r works with DirectX 12 games under Linux or Proton. The notes for versions 0.1.2 and 0.1.3 state that runtime and performance on RDNA 4 have not yet been tested.

Radeon models receiving support

D4r 0.1.2 adds native DLSS 4 and DLSS 4.5 network kernels for gfx1201. They target the Radeon RX 9070 XT, RX 9070, RX 9070 GRE and Radeon AI PRO R9700; gfx1200 builds were also included for the RX 9060 XT and RX 9060.

The RDNA 4 implementation can use FP8 matrix operations integrated into the architecture. NativeFp8 is enabled by default; disabling it makes the kernels use FP16, similar to the RDNA 3 implementation.

RX 7700 XT test results

In SILENT HILL Townfall, tested on a Radeon RX 7700 XT at 2560×1440 with the Quality preset, d4r 0.1.2 delivered 49.3 FPS with DLSS 4.5, compared with 48.4 FPS in version 0.1.1. DLSS 4 rose from 67.9 to 68.1 FPS, while DLSS 3 increased from 71.2 to 71.9 FPS.

D4r was originally created to run NVIDIA’s official nvngx_dlss.dll library with ZLUDA, ROCm and custom Radeon kernels on RDNA 3 graphics cards. Version 0.1.0 targeted Radeon RX 7000 cards and was tested on the RX 7700 XT.

On Radeon, the project currently supports only Super Resolution. Frame generation, ray reconstruction and DLSS 5 neural rendering are not included.
