Apple TV will begin offering Formula 1 coverage with Dolby Atmos during the U.S. Grand Prix weekend in Austin, Texas, starting Friday, October 23. The updated audio presentation will be available on supported devices.

The Dolby Atmos mix will cover team radio, commentary, engine sounds, on-track battles and pit-lane activity. Apple says the format is designed to make the race presentation more immersive.

Dolby Vision and Atmos for Formula 1

Apple describes the combination of Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos as a way to convey Formula 1’s full audiovisual intensity. Oliver Schusser, Apple’s vice president of music, sports, Apple TV and Beats, said the launch continues the company’s effort to change the sports-viewing experience.

John Couling, senior vice president of entertainment at Dolby Laboratories, said sound creates the emotional tension of a broadcast and that Dolby Atmos is intended to reproduce it.

The feature will work with supported Apple devices, as well as compatible Dolby-enabled televisions, soundbars and home-theater systems.

Last October, Apple and Formula 1 announced a five-year partnership granting Apple exclusive U.S. streaming rights. The agreement covers practice, qualifying, Sprint sessions and Grands Prix.
