Japanese magazine Famitsu has published the first review of Final Fantasy Resonance. Its four reviewers awarded the RPG 9 out of 10 each, while the main campaign is estimated to take 20–30 hours without extra content.
Famitsu has published the first review of Final Fantasy Resonance, Square Enix’s upcoming role-playing game. All four reviewers scored it 9 out of 10, giving the title a combined 36 out of 40 points.
The magazine estimates that the main story will take 20–30 hours to complete. Including additional content can extend the playtime to as much as 70 hours.
Final Fantasy’s first HD-2D entry
Final Fantasy Resonance is the first game in the series to use an HD-2D visual style, combining pixel art with 3D elements. The approach was first introduced in Octopath Traveler.
Reviewers praised the game’s classic JRPG feel and its use of series elements including crystals, jobs, summons, airships and other references. The “Visions” system supports character customization, while characters from earlier Final Fantasy games appear as Visions.
Breaks, Resonance and side quests
Combat lets players put enemies into a “break” state before using a Vision’s special “Resonance” attack. Famitsu also described the difficulty as well balanced, despite players needing “Phoenix Tails” from the beginning.
The reviews praised the game’s fast pace, side quests, music, characters and story. Famitsu also highlighted that the optional missions do not obstruct the main story’s progress.
Final Fantasy Resonance launches October 22, 2026 for Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch. A demo is already available to download.
