Final Fantasy 7 Remake series director Naoki Hamaguchi said player reactions did not alter the trilogy’s core story.

Speaking to EDGE, he said the full narrative arc was established at the beginning of the project, with details added as development began on each game.

The team kept the original direction

Hamaguchi said the periods between the releases of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Rebirth and Revelation could have allowed the team to respond to feedback, but it did not change course. The games were developed one by one without moving away from the central theme set at the start of the series.

He described the main challenge as more than adding elements that differed from the original or introducing new interpretations. The team repeatedly questioned whether its work could still be called Final Fantasy 7 rather than becoming the director’s personal fan project.

Original creators advised the team

The creators of the original Final Fantasy 7 were involved in the process. Hamaguchi said discussions with them and confirmation of details helped move the story forward, while the new generation was trusted with the overall direction.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth are already available on Nintendo Switch 2. Revelation, which is set to conclude the trilogy, is scheduled for April.
