Emerald AI, Google and NVIDIA form alliance for flexible AI data centers

Emerald AI, Google and NVIDIA launched the AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA), a coalition developing approaches for data centers that can manage electricity use according to grid conditions.

Flexible data centers can shift computing workloads, discharge stored power, use paired generation or respond to system contingencies. The founders say these capabilities could make more efficient use of existing capacity and speed connections for large facilities.

AEMA sets flexibility requirements

The alliance says its framework will be technology-neutral and performance-based, focusing on measurable factors including response speed, duration, predictability and behavior during emergencies.

Its principles include defining requirements in advance for staying connected during brief disturbances, reducing power use when needed and responding to contingencies. AEMA also plans to standardize technical requirements, performance metrics and operational data sharing.

Coalition spans power and computing

AEMA is intended to bring together AI-platform providers, data-center operators, technology companies, power producers, utilities and regional grid operators. Members will work with utilities on interconnection solutions and support policies recognizing grid-responsive demand.

The alliance also proposes faster interconnection pathways for customers able to verify flexibility commitments. Its principles call for allocating connection costs according to a facility’s actual system impacts and benefits.

NVIDIA and Emerald AI are already working with energy and infrastructure leaders on data centers that can respond to grid conditions in real time. AEMA is intended to broaden that work and develop models for deployment across the U.S.
