Google has confirmed that some Chromebook devices will be eligible to move to Googlebook OS. The company says this will be a selective migration rather than a forced upgrade for all devices.

Only newer commercial models will qualify, but Google has not identified them. The company says more details will come “in the near future.”

ChromeOS support ends in 2034

Google said ChromeOS support will end in mid-2034. For devices with 10-year update cycles extending beyond that date, the company promises a migration path to Googlebook OS.

Other Chromebook devices will continue receiving security patches until the end of their standard support periods. They will not be forced to move to the new system.

Googlebook OS is launching with Googlebook laptops from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo. The system combines ChromeOS work with Android technologies and integrates with Gemini; PCWorld described its early experience as more focused on a smartphone-style interface than on artificial intelligence, while highlighting support for isolated Linux environments.

Separate management tools for organizations

Existing ChromeOS Enterprise Upgrade and Education Upgrade licenses will retain their current management capabilities. Comparable Googlebook tools are planned for the second half of 2027, meaning administrators will temporarily need to manage two toolsets.

Google also says web-application support will continue despite Googlebook OS placing greater emphasis on Android applications. The first Googlebook laptops are available for pre-order, with shipments scheduled to begin in early October.
