OpenAI Says ChatGPT Integration With Siri Persistently Underperformed

OpenAI said in court filings that its ChatGPT integration with Siri got off to a slow start and continued to underperform. The company cited the limited user uptake in its defense against claims linked to Elon Musk’s lawsuit.

OpenAI said its integration of ChatGPT with Apple’s Siri substantially failed to meet expectations. The claim appears in court documents related to a lawsuit brought by companies linked to Elon Musk against OpenAI and Apple.

Apple added ChatGPT to Siri in December 2024. Users had to complete several steps to activate the feature, and in January 2025 OpenAI described the rollout as slow and reduced its forecast for incremental logged-in weekly active users from the partnership.

Apple and OpenAI agreement was non-exclusive

In a later section of the filing, OpenAI again described the integration as persistently underperforming. Much of the submission is redacted, including details of a March 2026 conversation between Apple and OpenAI.

OpenAI also said it requested a two-year exclusivity period, but Apple refused. The agreement expressly described the partnership as non-exclusive and allowed Apple to add products with similar functionality. Apple said it planned to start with one provider and add others; it also signed an agreement with Google, and its newest models are based on Gemini.

OpenAI’s argument in the xAI case

Musk’s companies alleged that Apple and OpenAI had an exclusive agreement that harmed xAI’s growth and customer acquisition. OpenAI disputes that claim and says that, even assuming exclusivity, xAI has not shown harm because the Siri integration brought in few new ChatGPT users.

The filing also cites an analysis by OpenAI expert Catherine Tucker. She calculated that the share of generative-AI consumers accessing ChatGPT through Apple Intelligence was minimal; the specific figures were redacted from the court materials.

Musk’s companies dropped their claims against Apple earlier this month, leaving OpenAI as the sole defendant. OpenAI is asking the court to dismiss xAI’s claims before the trial scheduled for January 2027.
