Repeated glass breakages at BOE's new factory in Chengdu could prevent the Chinese display maker from winning Apple's OLED iPad panel orders, The Elec reports.
The issue has continued for roughly six months at facility B16, which operates two eighth-generation OLED production lines. BOE has not yet identified what is causing the glass to fail.
Breakages can halt equipment for a day
When a glass substrate breaks, workers must remove fragments and inspect the machinery. The affected equipment can therefore remain unavailable for between half a day and a full day, disrupting other production as well.
Sources cited by The Elec said that even two or three breakages per 1,000 substrates could interfere with mass production. The incidents would need to be almost entirely eliminated to support continuous operation.
BOE has only recently begun qualification
According to the report, BOE only recently started Apple's panel qualification process. The manufacturing problems could delay orders or prevent the company from securing them.
Earlier reports linked BOE's plans to supply OLED panels for the iPad Air to its separate B12 facility in Chongqing, while B16 was associated with an effort to produce OLED MacBook Pro panels. An August report anticipated new iPad Air models with OLED displays in the first half of 2027, with Samsung Display expected to be the primary supplier.
BOE has previously faced manufacturing and approval problems involving Apple displays. In 2022, Apple reportedly halted production of BOE's iPhone 13 panels after finding unauthorized design changes. Reports in 2023 said light leakage around the Dynamic Island cutouts constrained iPhone 15 panel supplies, while a January report said Apple shifted millions of iPhone OLED panel orders to Samsung Display after BOE encountered further production difficulties.
