Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 Add a New Theater Mode Setting
Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 reduce heart-rate measurements to once every five minutes by default in Theater Mode. Users can restore continuous measurements through a new setting on the watch.
Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 add a new Theater Mode setting that controls how often the watches measure heart rate while the mode is active.
The new watches measure heart rate every five seconds, compared with every five minutes on prior models. As a result, the green sensor light on the back may flash almost continuously.
Theater Mode Reduces Measurement Frequency
Theater Mode is toggled through Control Center and prevents the display from lighting up. By default, it also changes heart-rate sensing from continuous measurements to once every five minutes, making the green light less noticeable in dark surroundings.
On the watch, users can open Settings > Heart and enable “In Theater Mode” under “Allow Continuous Measurements.” That restores more frequent measurements while Theater Mode is enabled.
Sleep Mode Uses the Same Interval
Sleep Mode also switches the watch to five-minute heart-rate measurements. The setting is intended to help preserve battery life while the user is asleep, when the watch does not need to track physical activity in the same way.
Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 are available now. The source says the green light may be visible when the band is loose, but provides no specific battery-life results for the new setting.
